PERSUASIVE WRITING
Essay 1: 3 pages double spaced typed (750-1000 words)
Final Due W March 5—bring drafts & notes!
Down Draft Due W. 2/27, Up Draft Due M. 3/3
Picture the car you hope to own in three years. Think of that place where you wish you could spend vacation. What’s the name of that movie you can’t wait to see? While these choices stem largely from your natural personality and tendencies, it’s a safe bet that some sort of persuasion and likely the media has played a role. Car ads. Travel brochures. Movie clips. Recommendations from friends. These powerful forms of persuasion penetrate your mind and your wallet. But why don’t those Swiffer Wet Jet commercials inspire you to beg your housemates to buy them so you can clean the toilet? Why aren’t (most of!) your teachers excited to see what’s new at the Skate Shop?
Target audience. In order to be persuasive, you must gear your argument toward the anticipated audience. It’s exactly how advertisers rope you in. Ads that persuade you to purchase products use different language, emphasis and style than those that aim to persuade your grandparents. The average yearly salary of a market analyst – a person hired by advertising companies to study what sells to certain groups of people – is about $60,000.
To further your awareness of targeting audiences, you (along with your peer group) created an ad campaign for an environmental problem. Your next assignment asks you to write a 3 page double spaced typed persuasive essay (or other form of persuasive writing) to convince your target argument to do something about a specific environmental problem. I encourage you to write to the audience you know best, but here are some other specific target audiences:
Couch potatoes Grandparents Teachers
Business people Pet owners Firefighters
Professional Athletes Musicians Teenagers
Hospital patients Artists Government officials
Mothers to-be Preschoolers Professional chefs
College students Avid readers Sailors
Health nuts Bikers Actors
Your topic can be the same one as for your ad campaign or it can be a different topic, but it must be a specific environmental problem which has come up in class with a specific solution; preferably one or more of the readings will be used, and possibly one of your “posts” will serve as a draft. Persuade your audience by using both personal experience and quotes from class readings or other research. All claims must be supported with evidence. I encourage you to bring a draft to a writing tutor for feedback.
What is your topic or the problem you hope to address?
What do you think will work as a solution?
What personal experiences can you use to develop your essay and support your claims?
Which texts might help you develop your essay and provide evidence for your claims?
Who is your audience? (Who do you want to convince to take what action about which problem?)

His way in telling a story very specific and clear. as reader, we can follow and use our imagination like we also involve in that story. It’s not easy to telling story about our experience to others that not familiar with the topic. However, in chouinard’s essay, is like we also experience what he told about.

On June 27 the world will celebrate the 126th anniversary of Helen Keller’s birth. Deaf and blind from infancy, Helen Keller played a leading role in most of the significant political, social, and cultural movements of the 20th century. Throughout her lifetime (1880-1968) she worked unceasingly to improve the lives of people who were blind and deaf. Helen’s own approach to life can be summed up by her advice to a five-year-old blind child in 1932:
“Never bend your head. Always hold it high. Look the world straight in the face.”
Helen Keller is a remarkable women who has inspire many people! Not just for one’s who are blind, but for who want changed. When I first read about her, I find that she was somehow gave me a strenght and learn to be strong. I think, Hellen Keller or Martin luther King,Jr are all great person. They have create changed and had done many great thing, although they might done in difference way!

To be honest, I don’t quite familiar in writing about comparison/contrast essay. I would appreciate if anyone can give me some advice about this issue.
Just to give it a try, I would like to compare similarities and contrast differences between Anzaldua’s writing process and my own. In Anzaldua’s writing, she used narrative style and she combines her native language into her writing. She also divided into difference part of topic. In my writing, I sometime do used narrative style, but because of lack of practice and writing not my favorite subject. I probably mostly just stated out my opinion in my writing. Sometime I found in my writing not coherent. I will just jump from one topic to another. To summarize, there are big differences between my processes of writing with Anzaldua’s. I still need a lot more practice and reading in able to improve my writing.

Honestly, I am not an environment fans. I never pay serious attention about what happen to our environment. But since I taking this class which involve in reading about environment theme, I guess is like somebody whisper into my ear _ “do something”. It’s scary to imagine that someday, our world just gone like the Easter Island or the Maya in Central America. I am not sure about that….just hope it won’t happen!
“It’s true that there are big differences between the situation of past societies and our modern situation today. The most obvious difference is that today we have six billion people equipped with heavy metal machines and nuclear power whereas the Easter Islanders had at most a few tens of thousands of people with stone chisel and human muscle power. Yet the Easter Islanders still managed to devastate their environment and bring their society to the point of collapse” (“The Mirror of Our Fate”, Jared Diamond). According to this quote, we should recognize and focus on how to not fall into same path as the Easter Islanders. We need to do something to protect our world for our children sake! I hope that one of us could start from the simple thing to save our world. Something like recycling maybe!
